The sub-region of Monção and Melgaço is made up of the Municipalities of Monção and Melgaço, historic towns with approximately 700 years of existence, both adorned with magnificent castles and which have defended the national territory since the conquest of Portuguese independence.

This sub-region is located in Alto Minho, bordering Spain through the river Minho, and enjoys a very particular microclimate characterized by cold winters with intermediate precipitation, while summers are very hot and dry, which denotes a limited Atlantic influence.

Birthplace of the Alvarinho variety, the sub-region of Monção and Melgaço not only has specific conditions for the existence of a highly typical wine, but is also distinguished by its unique landscapes, extremely rich in history and cultural and archaeological heritage.

Alvarinho, the Caste

Alvarinho is a white variety of the Vitis Vinifera species, originally from the Northeast of the Iberian Peninsula. It is considered the noblest of the Portuguese white grape varieties, giving rise to a very high quality wine, and it is in the sub-region of Monção and Melgaço that it reveals itself and reaches its maximum potential.

The single varietal wine of the Alvarinho variety (Vinho Alvarinho) is a little different from the other Vinhos Verdes, with an intense color, straw and citrus reflections, allowing it to reach relatively high alcoholic contents and with a balanced acidity.

The aroma of Alvarinho wine is intense, distinct, delicate and complex, ranging from quince, peach, banana, lemon, passion fruit and lychee (fruity character), orange blossom and violet (floral character), hazelnut and walnut (character). almond) and honey (caramelized character). Its flavor is complex, smooth, round, harmonious, full-bodied and persistent.

With a refined character, the Alvarinho wine is considered by many experts and critics as one of the best white wines in the world.
